Independent, non-profit trade association, the Music Managers’ Forum (MMF) Aotearoa, are returning to Invercargill this month with a follow-up seminar after their successful ‘How To Make Money From Your Music’ seminars in 2019. The essential Stage Two seminar, ‘How to Market and Promote Your Music’, is being hosted by the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) – business division of Te Pūkenga, at Te Rau o te Huia Centre for Creative Industries.
MMF exists to develop the skills and capacity of music managers, including self-managing artists. In an ever-evolving industry, it was crucial to stay at the forefront on how to release and promote contemporary music. NZ artists need to be active across many promotional channels to drive awareness of their projects, as they are mostly on worldwide digital platforms and face stiff competition.
MMF Operations Manager, Lorraine Owen, says "... with a majority of artists self-releasing, it is important that managers and musicians have strategic options in their tool kit for the benefit of their independent releases.”
The seminar will cover avenues of releasing, marketing and promoting music including publicity, bios, press releases, tips for pitching to media, marketing, digital marketing, social media, playlists and radio airplay. Ms Owen added they are looking forward to a great turnout in Invercargill as it has been four years since their last visit.
SIT Audio Production Programme Manager, Charlie Rodgers, says SIT was keen to support the workshop-style seminar through hosting it, because they had the ideal venue available, the former St John’s Church in Te Rau o te Huia. It also gave Audio and Music students direct access to industry people, which would be a valuable addition to their usual studies.
“The whole thing is about bolstering the musical arts in NZ. All Audio and Music students will be invited to attend and it will be of benefit to them,” he said.
