After a hiatus of eight months, Southern Institute of Technology’s Distance Learning faculty, SIT2LRN, is excited to announce that the Bachelor of Professional Communication will be accepting new students for Intake 1 in 2025.

In order for programme development to occur during 2024, applications on the degree programme were limited to returning students while enhancements were made. Dr Paul Pouwels McMillan, who joined SIT2LRN as the new Programme Manager in August, has been working collaboratively with the team to refine and develop the programme.

“We are thrilled to reopen the Bachelor of Professional Communication with SIT2LRN,” said Dr Pouwels McMillan, describing the programme as essential in today's fast-evolving communications landscape. “It provides both flexibility and cutting-edge content for individuals entering the media and communications field, as well as for those looking to enhance their skills in their current roles."

The programme has been well received by previous students, with graduates securing positions in fields such as education, tourism, local government, and journalism.

Dr Pouwels McMillan, who has extensive experience in academia, having worked with the University of Otago, Boxhill Institute, RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology), and Massey University, expressed high regard for the programme. “Having recently joined SIT, I am very impressed with the programme.” Dr Pouwels McMillan believes it has the opportunity to become a leading choice for communications students across New Zealand.

“This programme will produce well-rounded communication professionals, equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully to both their industries and their communities.”

Even during its pause in 2024, the demand for the programme remained strong, receiving continued interest from prospective students. “Given the progress we have made in the development process, we are pleased to offer new students the opportunity to begin their studies as we continue to expand and enhance the programme,” Dr Pouwels McMillan added.

For 2025, the majority of courses in the programme will be available, with offerings selectively scheduled across multiple intakes to accommodate the recent updates. New courses will continue to be added in 2025 as they become available.

Applications for Intake 1, 2025 (10 February to 06 June) are now open. For further information on the programme, or to enrol, go to Bachelor of Professional Communication programme page or call 0800 40 FEES.
