To signal the start of the second semester, the week’s activities provided a smorgasbord of free food, games, tunes and more, centred around lunch time each day, whilst the formal proceedings began on Monday morning with a pōwhiri at Hansen Hall, where more than 200 new students were welcomed onto the campus. Afterwards, there were tunes from SIT Music students, games and delicious roast lamb rolls, wraps and slices for lunch.
Tuesday saw the Community Market Day held in the H-block café area, where amongst the bustle of the stalls, free hot chips were handed out to students. Simultaneously, Hansen Hall was used as a student leisure space with free hot chocolates, XO Church providing games and DJ Num Nut putting on the sounds. Tuesday evening saw students enjoy movie night at SIT Centrestage with a screening of 'Sinners'.
Wednesday’s activities were located at SIT Student Services where students started the day right with a Matariki breakfast in the student lounge, followed by Your Corps Gaming, then a lunchtime barbecue served by staff. In the evening, local venue Sugar Shack hosted the Re-O Week Country Kick Off which included live music from SIT music students, and a beer pong competition against CEO Bharat Guha; students gave their checked shirts and cowboy boots an airing and enjoyed the good vibes.
The week’s on-campus activities finished on a high note, with the celebration of 25 Years of the Zero Fees Scheme at Hansen Hall for SIT Staff, students and generous community members and organisations who made it originally possible. In recognition of the milestone, Minister for Tertiary Education and MP for Invercargill, Hon Penny Simmonds, unveiled a new mahi toi (artwork) by SIT staff member Te Mauri who created a waka with sail, which commemorates the 25-year journey and points SIT toward the future.
