SIT/Telford and the Southern Rural Workforce Action Group and other agri-related organisations are planning to boost the agricultural and forestry workforces for the southern region. They have teamed up with a strategy to attract people who’ve been made redundant through COVID to try a new career in agriculture.
Recognising that people who have had employment in other sectors would need training for agricultural or forestry related careers, the groups have planned expos in Queenstown and Te Anau, three-day taster camps, a six-week training programme in agricultural contracting (both at SIT’s Telford Campus) and a three-week dairy familiarisation by Dairy NZ.
SIT Chief Executive, Penny Simmonds said there are great employment opportunities to be found in our incredibly important Agriculture and Forestry industries “The Ag Redeployment Expo is a collaborative effort by SIT/ Telford, Rural Contractors NZ, the Southern Rural Workforce Action Group, and Competenz to name a few. We envision the event will bring fresh ideas to those communities who’ve been reliant on tourism for many years and now need to look to a different sector to provide employment opportunities”.
Penny said the expos, taster camps and training programmes were great examples of a rapid response by local people to meet the regional employment needs of our very important industries.
