In 2023 the joint Otago Polytechnic, Southern Institute of Technology, and Ara Institute of Canterbury Research Symposium (‘OPSITARA’) was hosted by SIT in Invercargill. All three institutions are now business divisions within Te Pūkenga — New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, making this event also the first joint symposium for Region four of Te Pūkenga. As no national symposium took place in 2023, we opened OPSITARA to all business divisions across all regions of Te Pūkenga.

The symposium was held at Te Rau o te Huia (Southern Institute of Technology Centre for Creative Industries) from 10:00 on Thursday 30th November to 15:20 on Friday 1st December. Abstract submission was open from 20 June to 1 September, and all submissions were peer reviewed. In total, 115 presentations took place at the event including pre-recorded talks and meetings of Research Communities of Practice (RCoP), and there were around 120 in-person attendees. Fourteen business divisions of Te Pūkenga were represented at the event.

The symposium was organised and co-chaired by SIT Research Coordinator James L Savage and SIT Research Manager Sally Bodkin-Allen. We are grateful to all the presenters, attendees, abstract reviewers, caterers, and SIT staff who participated in and supported the event. This Book of Abstracts contains an index of presentation authors, the final programme for the symposium (including links to online pre-recorded talks), and then a full list of abstracts ordered by presentation type and first author surname.
