The Bachelor of Hotel Management prepares students for supervisory and management careers within the accommodation, hospitality, tourism, and wider service industries both in New Zealand and internationally.

Students study key areas such as marketing, operations, human resources, food and beverage management, event management, legislation, entrepreneurship, and financial accounting. The programme combines practical learning with industry-focused theory, helping students develop applied knowledge and real-world management skills.

Through assessments, field trips, volunteering opportunities, industry projects, and internship experiences, students gain valuable first-hand exposure to the hospitality and tourism industry. These experiences help build confidence, leadership skills, professional networks, and workplace readiness, preparing graduates for exciting careers in hotel management, tourism operations, events, retail, customer service, and many other people-focused industries.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Hotel Management are well prepared for supervisory and management roles within the accommodation, hospitality, tourism, and wider service industries. Career opportunities include hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism operations, event and convention centres, retail, customer service, and many other people-focused sectors.

Many recent graduates have successfully gained employment within the hospitality and tourism industry, progressed into leadership and supervisory roles with their employers, and even started their own successful small businesses. The programme provides a strong mix of practical industry experience and management knowledge, helping graduates build rewarding careers both in New Zealand and internationally.

Entry requirements

School leavers

You’ll need University Entrance (NCEA Level 3), including:

  • 14 credits in each of three approved Level 3 subjects
  • Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above, including 5 credits in reading and 5 in writing
  • Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1 or above from approved achievement standards, or all three numeracy unit standards: 26623, 26626 and 26627

Mature applicants

If you’re 20 or older and don’t meet the standard entry requirements, you may still be considered for admission.

You’ll need to demonstrate that you’re prepared to study at this level and have a reasonable chance of successfully completing the courses you enrol in.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, or your previous education was not taught in English, you’ll need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

You can meet this requirement through one of the following:

  • NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance
  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A Level where teaching and assessment were completed in English
  • CELTA or CertTESOL
  • Completion of primary education (equivalent to New Zealand Years 1 to 8) plus at least three years of secondary education taught in English in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • At least five years of secondary education taught in English in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • Completion of a tertiary qualification taught in English from a tertiary education provider in one of the countries listed above. This includes a bachelor’s degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, bachelor honours degree, postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, master’s degree or doctoral degree
  • An approved English language proficiency test that meets the requirements below

English language test requirements

  • IELTS Academic: 6.0 overall, with no band below 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT: 60, with a writing score of 18
  • TOEFL pBT: 550, with TWE 5
  • PTE Academic: 50, with no band below 42
  • Cambridge English: B2 First, B2 First for Schools, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, score 169, with no skill below 162
  • OET: Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL: Level 4 Academic
  • LanguageCert: C1 Expert International ESOL Written (LRW) Pass, with at least 25/50 in each skill, and Spoken (S) Pass
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II, with at least Distinction in each band

English language test scores must be achieved in a single test within the two years before enrolment.
