We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Academic Lead – Nursing to provide academic leadership to our Nursing programmes. This is a key position that combines academic leadership with supervisory responsibilities across a variety of programmes. The duties will include staff and financial budgeting, building and ensuring quality clinical experiences for students, ability to teach nursing subjects at postgraduate diploma level, research leadership and curriculum development responsibilities.

The Academic Lead – Nursing will play a crucial role in ensuring high standards of teaching and learning, promoting academic excellence, and meeting all regulatory and accreditation requirements for the nursing programmes. This is a leadership role requiring a balance of strategic vision, academic expertise, and operational oversight.

As a major component of this role is building and maintaining working relationships with significant industry and other stakeholders, exceptional communication and leadership skills must be demonstrated. The educational environment is rapidly changing and requires a person able to react quickly to new challenges while managing change effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional and academic leadership for the Nursing programmes
  • Oversee the staffing of the programme, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning outcomes for ākonga/students
  • Design, implement, evaluate, and resource the Nursing programme, ensuring alignment with academic goals and industry standards
  • Manage the entry of ākonga/students into the programme, ensuring all applicants meet the necessary criteria
  • Ensure compliance with NZQA and Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements
  • Foster productive working relationships and a positive learning environment within the Faculty of Health & Humanities
  • Collaborate with the Head of Faculty and other stakeholders to ensure continuous programme improvement and alignment with strategic objectives
  • Provide leadership in meeting any administrative requirements as directed by the Head of Faculty

Skills and Experience Required:

  • A registered nurse with an annual practising certificate
  • Relevant master’s degree
  • At least 5 -7 years of post-registration experience
  • Current approval from the Nursing Council of New Zealand
  • Extensive knowledge of tikanga and a commitment to incorporating the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi into academic practice
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with a proven ability to manage and develop academic staff
  • Experience in programme management and oversight, including curriculum development and programme evaluation
  • Strong understanding of NZQA requirements and the regulatory framework for nursing education
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with staff, students, and industry partners
